That's the idea behind our backyard happy hour series — proof that the best seat this summer isn't at a crowded bar, it's on your own patio. First up: The Sandbar, a layered rum cocktail that turns your countertop into a tiki bar in about five minutes flat.

Meet The Sandbar

Turquoise on the bottom, sunshine on top — this one's a beach in a glass. It's not just a pretty pour, either: the layering is a real bartending technique (the same density trick behind a tequila sunrise), so it holds its look from first sip to last.

You'll need:

• 1.5 oz coconut rum
• 0.5 oz white rum
• 3 oz pineapple juice
• 0.75 oz blue curaçao
• 0.5 oz cream of coconut
• Lime wedge, to finish

How to build it:

1. Shake the rums, pineapple juice, and curaçao with ice.
2. Strain over fresh ice in a tall glass.
3. In a separate shaker (no ice), froth the cream of coconut until slightly foamy.
4. Pour it slowly over the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top, forming the "sandbar" layer.
5. Garnish with a lime wedge and a paper umbrella. Best enjoyed with your feet up and the sun going down.
